Maid of the mist is a boat trip next to the gigantic waterfalls in America.  To get up and down to where we got on the boat we had to go down an elevator which for me it felt a bit scary as it was very loud and was a little bit rusty. Although we couldn’t get too close up we still got soaking wet and it was very windy from the power of the waterfalls that we almost fell over! As it was my mums birthday, we all got two goes on the boat. One getting soaking wet and the other inside the captains cabin. 

When we got in the cabin there were two captains. When we were leaving land I got to honk the horn (which was very loud and made everyone jump). I got to sit up on the captains chair as I couldn’t see around us. The captains wheel was huge!  It was very hot in the cabin.  It felt very unusual to go in the captains cabin as i have never been in one before.

The captains told us stories about the olden days. Each year when the river and waterfalls froze over the Americans and Canadians used to have a fair ground on the frozen ice. People came from miles around to enjoy the ride.  One winter the ice gave way and started to melt but no one noticed. People started to fall down the gaps and died so they had to stop.

During the time of prohibition (when Americans weren’t allowed to drink alcohol) the river froze over in the winter, the Canadians put stalls on the ice selling alcohol. The Americans would walk over and buy some and then walk back home!
